The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
