During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious start to his administration.

A Historic Mayor

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting suggestions to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a agenda featuring:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has sought to smooth over these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
